Exfoliation has taken the beauty world by storm, but there is such a thing as over-exfoliating.

If you were to ask most women about their daily beauty routines, many of them would say that they exfoliate every day. Exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells, but unfortunately, most of us are overdoing it and our skin is paying the price. Here are a couple of signs that you are probably over-exfoliating:

#1. Your skin is breaking out.

Exfoliation is one of those treatments that is supposed to help clear up breakouts, so how are breakouts a sign that you are over-exfoliating? Your skin has a lipid barrier that helps to keep bacteria out, and when you exfoliate too much, it actually causes that barrier to break down, leading to hypersensitivity and triggering acne.

#2. Your skin feels tight and dry.

Do you feel like your skin is cracking when you smile or frown, particularly after washing your face? When you strip the natural oils away from your skin with over-exfoliation, it causes it to lose its natural lubrication, making it feel uncomfortable and tight.

#5. Your skin has been peeling and/or flaking.

Over-exfoliation leads to your skin losing its ability to retain moisture. This can result in skin that has a rough texture or is peeling and/or flaking.

Over-exfoliation is just one of the pitfalls of DIY skincare, and in our last blog series, we touched on a few more of them.
