Exfoliation isn’t as straightforward as many people think, and, believe it or not, there is a way to do it wrong.

Exfoliation seems simple and fairly straightforward, but it’s all too easy to do it wrong and end up damaging your skin. In our previous blog series, the experts at Skinworx went over a few signs that you are over-exfoliating. Today, we will be discussing the dos and don’ts of exfoliation:

Do get to know your skin before you start exfoliating.

Skin care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and although exfoliation can be beneficial for all skin types, the type of skin you have will determine how often you should be exfoliating and with what products. If you’re unsure about the best exfoliation routine for your skin, talk to your dermatologist!

Don’t pick just any scrub.

Exfoliating scrubs can be great, but not all exfoliating scrubs are made equal. If your scrub has jagged granules, they can actually create micro-cuts in your skin, damage your capillaries and cause irritation and redness.

Do exfoliate sparingly.

Do you exfoliate on a daily basis? If so, you are probably doing more harm to your skin than good. You really only need to exfoliate once or twice a week, and if your skin is sensitive or acne-prone, you may need to exfoliate even less.

As you can see, there’s a right way and a wrong way to exfoliate your skin, and when you turn to Skinworx for a Hydrafacial in San Francisco, you can rest assured that our experts are doing it the right way. Stay tuned for our next blog for more dos and don’ts of exfoliation.
